Day 35: Mon 22 Apr 24 - Bridgetown to Augusta

Mon 22 Apr 24 - Bridgetown to Augusta (138km)

15 Deg, cloudy and light drizzle with a light S wind at Bridgetown, reaching 20 Deg with winds up to 56km/h at Augusta. As I write, you wouldn't know it the winds were so strong though, as the caravan park is well protected from the SE winds by a big hill and surrounding tall trees and bush. We have a great site in  very well protected caravan park (so long as the wind doesn't change direction).

As it was drizzling when we woke this morning, I put on a spray jacket and stepped out for a very pleasant walk along the rail trail through a community gardens complete with a Bush Tucker Trail with an excellent description of each of the plants including their aboriginal names and uses. It was very interesting. When I returned to the van, we decided that we would leave Bridgetown and stay an extra night at Augusta, extending our planned stay there to four nights.  Before we packed up, we walked down the street to a cafe for coffee and a muffin which were both very nice. When we returned to leave,  Colin and Carol from Cambewarra who we met at Borden and then again at the Valley of the Giants Tree Walk, pulled up for an overnight (or two) stay. We chatted for a while and agreed we would most likely see each other again as we appear to be following a similar route.  We eventually parted ways, driving away from Bridgetown at 1045.

The road (called the Brockton Highway) was very steep and winding, particularly leaving Bridgetown but the views along Blackwood River were very scenic. After 46km, we stopped in Nannup for a look around. Nannup, also known as 'The Garden Village', is situated on on the Blackwood River and surrounded by tall Karri and Jarrah tree forests. Nannup also has its fair share of interesting arts, crafts and antiques stores.  We had an hour just wondering around, and agreed it was another charming country town worth more than just a passing visit. There looked to be some wonderful walking and mountain biking trails also worth exploring.

After a little more than an hour in Nannup, we left for the remaining 92 km drive to Augusta. We arrived at the Turner Caravan Park at 1:50pm, set up on a nice open site and had a very relaxing afternoon. I went for a short walk along the foreshore while Noel baked a tasty fruit and nut slice for me. Apart from an annoying Kookaburra trying to steal our dinner every time I opened the lid on the BBQ, and a couple of ducks looking for a feed, we had a relaxing, and very quiet evening. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this caravan park, given some of the reviews on Wikicamps and the prices being charged ($52/night), but we are very happy. We’re looking forward to exploring the region as far as the Margaret River over the next 3 days.

Home for the next four nights - The Turner Caravan park at Augusta

This is my kind of caravan park

Augusta - Afternoon walk along the foreshore from the caravan park. A great day for kite surfing (3 kite surfers in the back ground - they're not birds)

While out walking - Noel was busy baking her favourite husband a 'Healthy Slice of Life'.

Annoying visitors while cooking dinner outside on the weber. The PITA Kookaburra was far too brazen for his (or her) own good, and the ducks crapped all over the mat. Googling how to make Peking Duck for dinner tomorrow night (Joking....)

PITA Kookaburra.
