Fri 26 Apr 24 - Augusta to Busselton (89km)
12 Deg overnight feeling much fresher, but finally the wind also backed off overnight. It was a beautiful clear and sunny afternoon in Busselton reaching 23 Deg and only a very slight SE wind.
We were late to rise again today, it's becoming a bit of a habit, but it didn't take us long to get ourselves organised and on the road by 0930. It was sad to hear of the fire emergency unfolding at Walpole and Denmark. We were very lucky not to be caught up in it as we only left Walpole on Sunday. Apart from the strong winds, it was a most enjoyable visit to Augusta, and we would gladly return again someday. It's a beautiful part of the country.
On the road, our first stop was 56km later at Cowaramap for coffee, and a long slow stroll to kill time before we could check in at Busselton. The town lies in the middle of the Margaret River wine region, and was named from the Cowaramup Siding, which was located near the townsite, on the now disused Busselton to Augusta railway. The name (pronounced kuh-wara-mup) is from an aboriginal word cowara, which is the native name for the purple crowned lorikeet. Cowaramup was difficult to pronounce, and so became known as Cowtown, hence all the cow sculptures around town - 42 in total.
After leaving Coawaramup, it was a short 33km drive to our destination (along more excellent road) for 4 nights at the Lazy Days Caravan Park about 5.5 km short of Busselton. It's a very old park, a bit run down and the layout is somewhat confusing, but we can't complain about our very spacious site with an extra large slab, almost big enough for a three bedroom house. At $68/night, the cost is high, but not so in comparison to what other parks are charging. I've heard parks are charging $100+ per night in Busselton, and they are all booked out.
After setting up, we had a light lunch and a cup of tea, then drove into Busselton for a look aound, and for Noel to book a massage on her sore neck and shoulders. She couldn't get one today, so she has booked in for 3:30pm tomorrow. We had a walk around town, including to the jetty and Visitor Information Centre, then returned to the caravan for the afternoon. I went for a late bike ride along the foreshore back into the Busselton Jetty and back - a very pleasant ride as the sun was setting. Back at the van, it was our normal routine of dinner (a very tasty porterhouse steak for me and lamb cutlets for Noel, both from the Butcher in Cowaramup), then blogging and TV.
