Sun 26 May 24 - Geraldton
Another magnificent day. 12 to 27 Deg C, clear, sunny day and very light (13-17 km/h) NE breeze in the morning, switching to a light WSW breeze in the afternoon.
Today was another very full day of socialising and visiting a few significant sights around Geraldton. First on the agenda, we joined Rick and Sharron for their routine morning coffee at the foreshore on another glorious morning. Afterwards, we returned home for breakfast, then Rick and I visited the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, a National Memorial that commemorates the loss of the HMAS Sydney II and the ships company of 645 men on 19th November 1941. We arrived too late for the scheduled daily guided tour, but Jan the guide who had just finished her tour, offered to provide us with our own personalised tour. Jan was most knowledgeable, describing all the different design elements of the memorial and their symbolism, and provided a brief history of the loss of the Sydney and how it was found. Read more about the memorial here: HMAS Sydney II
After about an hour at the memorial, I left a donation, then we proceeded to the Geraldton Museum for a quick walkthrough. I dropped Rick back home at about 1245, then I returned to visit the St Francis Xavier Cathedral. This Cathedral is a landmark building of international importance, and the story of this fabulous twentieth century cathedral has been published world-wide in a book listing 83 magnificent cathedrals from around the world. Read more about the Cathedral history here: Geraldton Cathedral.
I then continued for a walk along the foreshore and through the quite main street, past some other significant buildings before returning home to meet the others to go the beach for a swim. After a very refreshing swim, we went for a drive around town, past the harbour and silo facilities, then returned home where we were joined by Sharon's parents for dinner and a very jovial evening. Another great day.
