Day 40: Sat 27 Apr 24 - Busselton

Sat 27 Apr 24 - Busselton

We woke to 7 feeling like 5 Deg and the light smell of bush fire smoke in the air. It was slightly hazy outside, but neither the smell nor the haze hung around for long. It turned out to be a beautiful clear sunny day reaching 23 Deg with a very light breeze - a stunning day.

After an awesome morning walk along the beach (about 4km), I returned for breakfast then Noel and I drove into Busselton to walk the 1.8km (each way) Busselton Jetty, but only after our daily caffeine fix. We could have caught an electric train along the jetty, but it was much more enjoyable taking our time walking and stopping occasionally to look over the side and into the distance. Along the way, we even spotted a pod of dolphins in the distance (according to a marine biologist nearby they were mating). It was a wonderful display the dolphins put on, some dancing on their tails before appearing to be pulled beneath the water again, and just splashing about wildly.

The Busselton Jetty, originally built in 1865 and refurbished in 2011 at a cost of $27m is the longest timber-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere (1,841m). It was a very pleasant walk to the end and back with beautiful weather. Back on the mainland at 1230, we found a lovely cafe and had a light lunch before I returned to the van to go for a ride, leaving Noel in town for her 3.30 massage appointment.

Back at the van, I got changed and headed out for a 20km bike ride along the foreshore (gee they do bike paths well in WA), before returning to the van and swapping the bike for the car to return to town to collect Noel from her massage. The massage received a rating of excellent and made a huge difference, but she may need another session or two. Back at the van after dinner, the smell of smoke became thick again. It doesn't appear to be a local fire, rather it's likely that it's blowing in from the Walpole, Tingledale and Denmark districts. It's sad to think this fire was deliberately lit with 7 ignition points found.

Morning walk along the beach - I forgot how amazing west coast beaches are on a good day.
