Sat 04 May 24 - Rockingham (Mandurah)
14 to 20 Deg C, mostly clear and sunny with no wind in the morning, wind becoming stronger throughout the day, then light again in the evening. I went for an early 6km walk along Rockingham beach and foreshore on a slightly fresh, but otherwise magnificent morning. Not wanting to risk injury, I decided not to join KJ on his regular Saturday Park Run. After his run and my walk, we met KJ back at his house for breakfast in his garden where we were joined by his friends Peter (fellow photographer) and Thelma (very witty neighbour). After a couple of very pleasant hours eating, drinking coffee, chatting and looking at one of Peter's Photo books from the Karijini National Park, we set off on a drive to Mandurah for a look around. Noel and I are both amazed at how much the whole area between Rockingham to Mandurah has grown since we lived here 28 years ago. It felt like we were driving through one city after another. In Mandurah, we had a wander around the quays, then set out to find the Giants of Mandurah, an outdoor exhibition comprising 6 giant sculptures by artist Thomas Dambo. The Giants of Mandurah is an outdoor walking trail experience, with each of the sculptures requiring varying walking distances, and they weren't easy to locate (well not for me anyway). The idea is to find five to unlock the code to a secret location for the sixth one. We managed to find three before running out of time and returning to the caravan for a reset before going to KJ's house for dinner with mutual friends and Edna, his mother who flew in from Adelaide today. It was a lovely evening outdoors by a fire with good Indian food (mostly take-away), and good company. It was great seeing Frank again, a very good Canberra running companion from years ago now living north of Perth, other ex-Navy colleagues and Edna.
